Iran operates under a power structure where a single unelected man, the Supreme Leader, holds near-total control over the country's military, judiciary, intelligence services, and foreign policy. The Supreme Leader commands the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, appoints key judicial figures, and controls state media, all without facing a single vote from the Iranian public.
Even in elections where citizens do cast ballots, the Council of Guardians, six of whose twelve members are appointed directly by the Supreme Leader, decides which candidates are even allowed to run. Real democratic choice is filtered out before it begins. Extending his reach further, roughly 2,000 clerical representatives are embedded throughout every sector of the Iranian government, often wielding more influence than the president's own cabinet ministers.
Then there are the foundations, vast economic entities established after the Islamic Revolution that seized billions in assets from the Shah, a leader the United States helped install after the CIA removed Iran's democratically elected prime minister in the 1950s. These foundations control hundreds of companies, are largely exempt from taxes, and by some estimates consume over half of Iran's state budget while representing up to 40% of the entire economy. The result is a system where religious authority and financial corruption are deeply intertwined, crowding out competition, fueling public resentment, and ensuring that those at the top are always positioned to benefit.
