The Supreme Court just handed Donald Trump the kind of power usually reserved for kings and monarchs, quietly gutting 90 years of precedent giving him unprecedented power over independent federal agencies.
A shocking (well not really) unsigned decision from the conservative majority of the Court, issued on the shadow docket, that effectively overturns the 1935 Humphrey’s Executor ruling. This decision allows the president to fire independent agency heads without cause—something that’s been illegal for nearly a century.
Justice Elena Kagan’s blistering dissent, joined by Sotomayor and Jackson, lays bare what’s at stake: the destruction of checks and balances, and the rise of an unchecked “unitary executive.” Trump and his loyalists aim to reshape every federal institution in his image, and now he may have the Supreme Court’s blessing to do just that.
In line with all things Project 2025 this moment could mark the collapse of structural restraints on presidential power. But hey, who could have seen it coming, right? FFS.
