Senator John Barrasso appeared on Meet the Press and delivered a statement that has political analysts stunned. When asked about voting on the discharge petition to release the Epstein files, the Wyoming Republican refused to commit to even holding a vote, stating his concern was preventing Donald Trump from becoming a lame duck president. Trump repeatedly promised voters during his 2024 campaign that he would release the Epstein files, claiming all perpetrators were Democrats and left-wing figures. His base, fueled by years of conspiracy theories from Pizzagate to QAnon, expected this as their reward for reelecting him. Now, with Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel claiming there is no client list and closing investigations, Trump supporters are demanding answers.
House Republicans face a difficult choice. The discharge petition vote forces them to either support releasing the Epstein files or explain to constituents why they voted to continue the cover-up. Many are expected to vote yes rather than face accusations of protecting pedophiles heading into midterms. Senator Barasso's refusal to commit to a Senate vote, combined with his admission that releasing the files would damage Trump's presidency, suggests the contents are far more damaging than anyone anticipated. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has already faced death threats from Trump supporters after calling for release of the Epstein files. The question remains: if Trump is innocent, why are Republicans fighting so hard to keep the Epstein files secret?
