Trump pardoned Democratic Congressman Henry Cuellar from Texas, a move that spectacularly backfired on Republicans. Cuellar faced bribery charges for accepting nearly $600,000 from an Azerbaijani energy firm and a Mexican bank, with prosecutors calling it a slam dunk case involving money laundering through shell companies. Two political consultants who were co-conspirators pleaded guilty to conspiring with Cuellar to launder bribe money.
After receiving the pardon, Cuellar immediately filed paperwork to run for reelection as a Democrat, not switching parties as Trump apparently expected. Trump lost his composure on Truth Social, complaining about loyalty and declaring no more Mr. Nice Guy. The pardon has now shifted the Cook Political Report rating for Cuellar's seat to lean Democrat, meaning Trump actually increased the chances of a Democratic victory in a competitive race.
House Republicans are left dealing with the fallout as their razor thin majority faces new challenges. Despite Trump pressuring state legislatures to redraw congressional maps to gain even a single seat, the Henry Cuellar pardon compromised Republican ability to flip this competitive Texas district. Hakeem Jeffries praised the pardon while Republicans wonder whether Trump had any conversations with Cuellar about switching parties, or if Trump's inner circle misled him about Cuellar's intentions. The incumbent advantage now strongly favors Democrats keeping this seat.
