12:21Now PlayingProsecutors will have the opportunity to present evidence in relation to R. Kelly's marriage with Aaliyah, a young woman at the time, during his federal case for sex-trafficking in New York which begins next week. USA Today reports that evidence that Kelly had sexual contact when she was a teenager was presented at the pre-trial hearing held on August 3.
In 1994, the Chicago crooner and disgraced singer secretly married Aaliyah at age 15. Kelly's entourage allegedly bribed someone to get a fake ID for Aaliyah, claiming that she was 18. Prosecutors claim that Aaliyah was pregnant by Kelly and that he planned the marriage to protect him from criminal charges. A wife can't testify against her husband. Aaliyah will be referred to in the trial as Jane Doe.
Kelly's defense lawyer also did not deny Kelly's romantic relationship with the singer during the hearing.
The New York Daily News reported U.S. District Judge Ann Donnelly asking Kelly's attorney Thomas Farinella: "Are you going deny that Jane Doe 1 had sexual contact?" They were married." Farinella replied, "No."
Kelly's trial is set to begin in Brooklyn on August 9. Kelly is being tried on charges of transporting underage girls across state lines to engage in sexual activity with child pornography and manage a "criminal enterprise". Federal prosecutors are also pushing to bring up sex crimes that Kelly llegedly committed with over a dozen people that he has not been charged with, including claims that he also had sexual relationships with underaged boys in Chicago. The prosecutors stated in court documents that the alleged crimes were "directly relevant to" and "inextricably intertwined" with the evidence of the charges.
