10:17Now PlayingThe Bermontiad was a crucial episode in Latvia’s War of Independence, fought in the autumn of 1919. It began when Pavel Bermont-Avalov’s Western Russian Volunteer Army, supported and supplied by German interests, launched a surprise attack on Riga on October 8. Although Bermont’s troops were larger and better equipped, the newly formed Latvian Army, backed by the Entente Allies, resisted with determination. The fighting reached its decisive moment on November 10–11, when Latvian forces liberated Pārdaugava, forcing the Bermontians into a rapid retreat toward Jelgava. The fall of Jelgava on November 21 effectively ended the campaign, marking one of Latvia’s first major military victories as an independent nation.
The Bermontiad became a powerful symbol of Latvian resolve. It demonstrated not only the army’s growing capability but also the population’s unity and willingness to defend the ideals of independence, democracy, and national self-determination.
