It’s a question some are asking following the controversial appointment of a new curator tasked with stewarding Mauna Ala, the burial place of Hawaiian Royalty, as reporter Blaze Lovell told Hawaii News Now. The appointment of Doni Chong in May broke the tradition of selecting descendants of those who buried Kamehameha I’s remains.
So the Office of Hawaiian Affairs held a closed-door meeting with representatives of the alii trusts, which pay for the upkeep of the Royal Mausoleum and hold billions in assets intended to benefit Native Hawaiians. OHA is quietly gauging interest to see if the trusts would be interested in co-stewarding the site.
