One in eight Hawaiʻi public school students attend a campus outside of their community.
For nearly 30 years, Hawaiʻi has allowed families to request a so-called geographic exception as a way to access special programs or attend campuses more convenient for parents.
But these exceptions have been abused over the past two decades as parents seek to send students to higher-achieving schools.
As one principal said, “it’s a slippery slope” for schools losing out on enrollment and, therefore, funding.
And as the Department of Education weighs school closures, the stakes are high.
