Lower electricity rates could be possible down the road as Hawaiian Electric Co.’s hold on our electricity market comes to an end in 2027.
That’s when HECO will be required to let independent electricity producers use its grid for a fee under a bill signed last week by Gov. Josh Green. The governor’s decision marked a reversal from his original plans to veto the measure.
Even critics say the bill could result in savings, but they point out some unintended consequences.
