1:19Now PlayingGet the final report in our latest investigative series, “When No One Is Watching,” about shortcomings in the Hawaiʻi foster system.
Read more about the stories of victims of foster parent John Teixeira, who said he took in nearly 60 kids over the course of two decades with almost no oversight from child welfare officials. Teixeira was ultimately sued by one of his former foster children.
“Life for a young boy in the Teixeira foster home was a struggle for survival akin to ‘Lord of the Flies,’” wrote the judge in his opinion, referencing the novel about marooned boys creating a brutal society. “The older boys were abusive and Defendant Teixeira, an abuser himself, failed to protect younger boys from them.”
