In less than two years, a new group will assume oversight responsibilities of Mauna Kea.
For a long time, the University of Hawaiʻi has controlled most of the controversial telescope leases on the mountain. Now, they’ll have to work in step with the 12-member Mauna Kea Stewardship and Oversight Authority.
The authority says it’ll take time to chart its next steps and has held a number of community meetings bringing together folks on both sides of the fence. But the university has already raised concerns that new officials are moving too slowly.
