Officials fear that the casualties may rise further as the day progresses. Among the 14 deaths, six lives were lost in St Lucie County on Florida's Atlantic coast, where officials said tornadoes touched down.
Hurricane Milton started from the Gulf of Mexico and traversed through to the Atlantic as it was downgraded to Category 3 hurricane with 120 mph sustained winds. Carrying catastrophic winds, Hurricane Milton spawned a flurry of tornadoes as it slammed into Florida’s western coast. Florida’s Tampa city experienced a reverse storm surge that drove water away from the shoreline rather than overwhelming the city. The Florida Division of Emergency Management in a post on social media, warned residents not to walk out into receding water because "the water will return through storm surge and poses a life-threatening risk."
President Joe Biden condemned the spreading of misinformation about hurricanes Helene and Milton, warning that “outright lies” are keeping victims from seeking help they need. He was responding to the false claims made by former president Donald Trump in the wake of Hurricane Helene.
