US President Joe Biden, in a brief exchange with reporters on Sunday, said that he agreed to deploy the THAAD battery “to defend Israel”, without elaborating further. Pentagon spokesperson Pat Ryder stated that this move aims to bolster Israel's air defense capabilities amid increasing threats.
President Joe Biden emphasised that the deployment is intended to defend Israel, following a stern warning from Tehran for US forces to stay clear of the region. This announcement comes as the situation between Iran and Israel grows increasingly volatile.
Responding to the development, Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, warned that the US was putting the lives of its troops "at risk by deploying them to operate US missile systems in Israel".
He tweeted, "While we have made tremendous efforts in recent days to contain an all-out war in our region, I say it clearly that we have no red lines in defending our people and interests".
