But the Palestinian group claims that Israel’s proposal aims to strip them of their leverage, by making them return hostages without securing meaningful concessions. As part of its 45-day ceasefire proposal, Israel wants Hamas to release US-Israeli citizen Edan Alexander, on the first day. Alexander was serving in the Israeli Defense Forces. Israel wants Hamas to release him, as a goodwill gesture to the US.
This comes after Hamas recently released a video of Alexander pleading with the Israeli government, to end the war and save his life. In the video, he was seen criticising Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for renewing military operations in Gaza and risking their survival. Apart from that, Israel has sought the permanent disarmament of Hamas, and all Palestinian armed factions in the Gaza Strip. Israel says that it is the prime condition for a permanent end to the war.
