Anti-government protests have escalated sharply, forcing the evacuation of 1,400 tourists from Machu Picchu, while nearly 900 remain stranded as protesters block railway tracks. At least 18 people were injured in Lima over the weekend as police and demonstrators clashed violently. Authorities confirmed 12 police officers and 6 journalists were among the injured, with reports of pellet wounds and tear gas used against protesters.
Protesters are rallying against President Dina Boluarte’s government and a controversial pension withdrawal measure, warning it will leave millions of Peruvians vulnerable.
