11:55:00Now PlayingJudges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) will hand down a judgment in the landmark war crimes trial of Ali Muhammad Ali Abd–Al-Rahman, known as Ali Kushayb, accused of orchestrating mass atrocities in Darfur as a Janjaweed militia leader between August 2003 and April 2004. Kushayb faced 31 counts including murder, torture, mass rape, persecution, attacks on villages, and forced population transfers; prosecutors described his actions as “beastly violence” under the orders of Sudan’s then government. The trial, which began in April 2022, saw testimony from more than 50 survivors detailing systematic ethnic cleansing and village attacks that left over 300,000 dead and millions displaced. Kushayb denied all charges, claiming mistaken identity and fleeing Sudan only after the government announced cooperation with the ICC, before surrendering to authorities in Central African Republic in 2020. Today’s verdict comes as war crimes and famine still afflict Darfur, with UN and ICC officials warning that crimes against humanity continue amid ongoing civil conflict. If convicted, Kushayb could receive life imprisonment, marking a watershed ruling against impunity for mass atrocity and targeting of civilians in Sudan.
