9:30Now PlayingWorld News: A heated debate erupted in the UK Parliament on Monday as lawmakers pressed the government for clarity over Britain’s stance on the growing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz amid the ongoing Iran war. The discussion came after U.S. President Donald Trump called on NATO allies to help secure the crucial shipping lane, saying he was working to assemble a coalition of around seven countries to keep the strait open.
During the parliamentary session, one UK lawmaker sharply criticized Trump, claiming the U.S. president had shifted his stance after previously boasting about success in the conflict. “Having insulted Great Britain for our response to not joining his wall and then claiming that he did not need British help after having ‘already won the war’, President Donald Trump has now sent an SOS to the world, including to the UK and other NATO allies, to help him protect the Strait of Hormuz,” the lawmaker said. He then asked the government to clarify what Britain’s official response would be to the request from Washington.
Responding to the question, UK Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, calling it vital for global security and the international economy. However, he stopped short of committing to any military involvement, stating that the UK was continuing discussions with European partners and the United States. “These questions are complex,” Healey said.
The debate follows comments from UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who earlier said Britain does not want to be drawn into a “wider war” in the Middle East as tensions escalate between the U.S. and Iran.
Meanwhile, President Trump warned that NATO could face a “very bad future” if allies fail to provide support in maintaining security in the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most critical maritime routes, responsible for transporting a major share of global oil supplies.
