Speaking during a lunch with the Trump Kennedy Center board members on Monday, Trump said he was “very surprised” by the response from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer when asked to send naval support.
Trump revealed that he had urged the UK two weeks earlier to dispatch ships to help secure the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route. However, according to Trump, Starmer was reluctant to take that step. “I was very surprised with the United Kingdom,” Trump said, adding that he reminded Britain of the long-standing alliance between the two nations and the United States’ role in NATO and global security.
While Trump clarified that he was “not happy” with the lack of immediate backing, he suggested the UK could still join the effort later. “I think they’ll be involved, maybe. But they should be involved enthusiastically,” he said. Trump also emphasized that the United States has long played a leading role in protecting allies through NATO and global military presence.
The comments come as tensions escalate in the Middle East, with the Strait of Hormuz emerging as a flashpoint in the ongoing Iran conflict. Trump has said he is working to assemble a coalition of around seven allied countries to help ensure the critical shipping lane remains open, although the nations involved have not yet been publicly confirmed.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime corridors, handling a significant portion of global oil shipments. Any disruption in the region could have major implications for global energy markets and international security.
Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Monday that Britain does not want to be drawn into a wider war, signaling caution from London as the crisis continues to unfold.
