Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard faced intense questioning from lawmakers during a global threats hearing, where she reiterated that it is ultimately President Trump’s responsibility to determine whether Iran posed an “imminent threat” based on intelligence assessments. She also warned that Iran has “maintained the intention to rebuild its infrastructure and nuclear enrichment capability” following U.S. strikes on nuclear sites in 2025.
The hearing took a dramatic turn as Gabbard addressed the resignation of Joe Kent, former head of the National Counterterrorism Center, who stepped down in protest of the war. In his letter, Kent claimed Iran posed no imminent threat and accused Israel of influencing the U.S. into conflict. When asked by GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik whether those comments concerned her, Gabbard responded, “yes.”
Lawmakers also debated intelligence credibility, with all five intelligence leaders agreeing that a 2023 assessment dismissing foreign involvement in Havana Syndrome should be retracted—adding another layer of controversy to the proceedings.
Democratic Rep. Jason Crow pressed Gabbard on the uncertainty surrounding Iran’s leadership following the reported death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Gabbard acknowledged that the situation is increasingly unclear, stating that leadership intentions are “less certain” than they were just weeks ago. She also noted that Mojtaba Khamenei, reportedly named as successor, has not been seen publicly and may have been severely injured in recent strikes.
The broader debate also centered on the effectiveness of U.S. military action. Following “Operation Midnight Hammer,” which targeted key Iranian nuclear facilities, President Trump has repeatedly claimed the program was “obliterated.” However, ongoing intelligence concerns suggest Iran may still pose a future nuclear threat, raising serious questions about the administration’s narrative.
