Stefanik pressed Gabbard on national security risks at home, questioning whether the ongoing conflict could fuel the rise of Islamic terrorism on U.S. soil. The exchange quickly turned intense as she brought up the resignation of Joe Kent, a top aide who stepped down in protest of U.S. strikes on Iran.
In his resignation letter, Kent—former Director of the National Counterterrorism Center—wrote, “I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran. Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.” His remarks have sparked major controversy across Washington.
Stefanik strongly rejected Kent’s claims, saying she “cannot say how much” she disagrees with his statement, and directly asked Gabbard whether she shared his concerns. Gabbard responded that intelligence assessments had been provided to the president, who ultimately makes decisions based on available information.
“But do you agree with — does that statement he made blaming Israel concern you?” Stefanik pressed further, highlighting the deep divisions and high stakes surrounding U.S. foreign policy and intelligence oversight.
