Alsobrooks highlighted that both a federal district court and the DC Circuit Court of Appeals blocked the move, calling it a major test of Federal Reserve independence.
Citing Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, she noted that allowing Cook’s firing could “weaken, if not shatter” the Fed’s independence, and directly challenged Warsh on whether he would defend Cook and Chair Jerome Powell. She also slammed the Trump administration for “doubling down” on what she described as a “ridiculous exercise,” referring to the Justice Department’s investigation into Powell—an inquiry Powell himself has dismissed as a “pretext” for policy disagreements.
Warsh, however, repeatedly declined to take a position, stating it would be inappropriate to comment on ongoing litigation and emphasizing that “Fed independence means everything” to him. He also denied any pressure from President Trump to alter interest rates.
