Speaking at the informal EU leaders’ summit in Nicosia on Friday, Kallas said the wars in the Middle East are affecting the entire world and stressed the urgent need to push for peace and stability in the region.
She warned that ongoing negotiations with Iran must go beyond the nuclear issue and also address missile programmes, support for proxy groups, and broader security threats. “Everybody was very clear that the freedom of navigation is non-negotiable, so the Strait of Hormuz has to be open without any tolls,” she said, adding that efforts must be made to ensure safe passage. Kallas also pointed to EU naval missions like ASPIDES and ATALANTA, suggesting they could be ramped up with more ships and capabilities to secure the region.
When asked about lifting sanctions on Iran, she cautioned that limited agreements could backfire, saying if talks focus only on nuclear issues without broader oversight, the result could be “a more dangerous Iran” and a weaker deal than the JCPOA. She emphasized the need for coordination with regional actors to address all concerns, including hybrid and cyber threats. Her remarks come just a day after she revealed that EU ministers are “really pushing” for a 21st package of sanctions on Russia, highlighting Europe’s firm stance on global conflicts and security challenges.
