Sánchez hit back, noting that Spain has met NATO capability requirements with 2.1% of GDP, in line with commitments agreed at the 2014 summit.
He also addressed broader geopolitical tensions, calling out what he described as Europe’s “double standard” in its response to conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, particularly regarding international and humanitarian law.
On the escalating Iran war, Sánchez delivered a blunt message, urging greater coordination among allies before engaging in conflicts:
“I would say that it would be important if European countries and European allies… share our thoughts and information before starting wars.” In a sharp critique, he added: “From my point of view, this war is illegal, it's a big mistake… I hope that in the near future we can face de-escalation thanks to diplomacy and not wars.”
Media reports have also suggested internal discussions in Washington about reviewing commitments to allies deemed “unsupportive,” further fueling tensions within NATO. Pedro Sanchez’s remarks signal growing unease within Europe over both the direction of global conflicts and the future of transatlantic relations, as calls for diplomacy and unity grow louder.
