19:21Now PlayingUK News: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer came under fierce attack in Parliament during a heated House of Commons debate following the King’s Speech, as MPs challenged him directly on Brexit, Europe, energy prices, defense spending, Ukraine, Iran, and Northern Ireland.
One lawmaker accused Starmer of turning Britain into a “subservient rule taker from a foreign parliament,” warning that the UK was facing a “denial of democracy.” Starmer fired back, saying “promises were made about Brexit which were not true” and argued that “it is in our economic interests, our national interest and defense interests to be closer to Europe.”
On the Iran war and escalating tensions in the Middle East, Starmer delivered a strong message from Parliament, warning against reckless military escalation. He declared: “It is not in the interests of this country to rush into a war without any thought of the consequences.” Starmer also said Britain would work with allies “to reassure shipping in the Strait of Hormuz” and stressed that the UK was “building an international effort to solve” the Iran crisis rather than simply “manage the fallout.”
The Prime Minister also defended his government’s energy agenda, declaring: “We are going to declare Britain’s energy independence,” while insisting that Britain must move “much faster on clean energy.” An SNP MP challenged him over Scotland paying higher energy prices despite producing surplus electricity.
On foreign policy and security, Starmer said “it is not in the interests of this country to rush into a war without any thought of the consequences,” while reaffirming support for NATO, Ukraine, and international efforts surrounding the Iran crisis. He also accused Conservatives of “hollowing out defense spend.”
The debate became even more explosive when Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey warned: “This Prime Minister may soon not be in power,” calling the King’s Speech “the most surreal” he had heard in Parliament. Davey also attacked Donald Trump, saying Trump “should not have been rewarded for insulting British soldiers and the Royal Navy.” The tense exchange also included clashes over Northern Ireland veterans, Britain’s economic future, anti-Semitism, and the UK’s relationship with Europe.
