8:04Now PlayingUS News: At House Education Committee hearing on Thursday, Rep. Mark Takano (D-CA) sharply questioned Education Secretary Linda McMahon over massive staffing cuts and delays at the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR).
During the heated exchange, Takano accused McMahon of failing to understand the importance of OCR after more than half its staff were fired. “They were firing half the staff that you needed at OCR, and it took you 10 months to figure out that that was a mistake,” Takano said.
The California Democrat also blasted the department’s handling of civil rights complaints, noting that only 112 out of nearly 12,000 pending complaints resulted in resolution agreements in 2025. “That’s 1%, the lowest level of case resolutions in a decade,” he said.
Takano repeatedly pressed McMahon on whether the Trump administration’s budget would further cut OCR staffing levels, accusing her of avoiding direct answers during the hearing. “You came into office unprepared and didn’t know the importance of OCR, did you?” he asked.
The tense hearing also focused on administrative leave costs, taxpayer spending, civil rights enforcement, and the future of federal education oversight under the Trump administration.
