25:37Now PlayingIs Amy Griffin using NDAs to keep key people connected to The Tell from speaking publicly?
Billy Bush digs into new information surrounding Amy Griffin’s bestselling memoir and the ongoing Jane Doe lawsuit. A former classmate tells Billy that the woman portrayed as “Coach Bess Taylor” in The Tell signed an NDA at Griffin’s request. Separately, a credible source tells Billy that the man identified as “James” in the memoir also signed an NDA and may have received compensation. Billy has reached out to both individuals for comment.
That raises a much bigger question: How many people connected to the stories in The Tell may be under nondisclosure agreements — and what happens if those people are eventually subpoenaed?
Billy also examines another intriguing piece of the Amy Griffin story: the disputed postcard at the center of Jane Doe’s allegations. Jane Doe says she and Griffin met in Palm Springs in 2019 and exchanged postcards — a meeting Griffin has denied. Now, an unusual connection between the photograph on that postcard and the 2019 Palm Springs International Film Festival is raising new questions.
Plus, Billy breaks down recent comments from Dial Press editor-in-chief Whitney Frick about memoirs, fact-checking and where responsibility lies for an author’s story; looks at the continuing role of The Tell ghostwriter Sam Lansky; and asks whether settlement may ultimately become Amy Griffin’s best way out of an increasingly complicated legal fight.
The questions surrounding Amy Griffin, The Tell and the Jane Doe lawsuit continue — and Hot Mics is following every development.
