Is The Tell Cover Art STOLEN?

Is the cover of Amy Griffin’s bestselling memoir The Tell a little too familiar? In a Hot Mic’s exclusive,

Billy Bush sits down with Kore Yoors, son of acclaimed Belgian-American artist Jan Yoors and the man who now runs his father’s estate, to examine the striking similarities between the cover art for The Tell and Jan Yors’ distinctive artwork.

Kore says that when The Tell was released, people familiar with his father’s work actually contacted him assuming the cover was Jan Yors’ artwork — even congratulating him on the exposure.

But it wasn’t.

A reverse-image search ultimately led C to a AI-generated, copyright-free content. He then contacted the Artists Rights Society, which had previously represented the Yoors estate in another case involving the unauthorized use of Jan Yoors work. According to Kore, the organization concluded that The Tell image had been altered enough that the estate could not demonstrate a direct one-for-one copy.

So what happened?

Was the cover simply inspired by Yoors work? Is the resemblance a coincidence? Or was an existing artistic style altered just enough to avoid a copyright problem?

Kore explains what his family would have wanted: permission, credit and compensation. He also discusses the unusual history of his father, whose extraordinary life included World War II resistance work before he became an internationally recognized artist.

And there’s another layer to the controversy: Amy Griffin is deeply connected to the art world, including serving as a trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
