He tried switching fuel tanks and then he put the plane in glide speed, which gave him two minutes to find a place to land on a Long Island beach. With seconds to spare, Vanel glided his plane in for a landing. Miraculously, he did not injure himself. Now, Vanel is receiving a medal for outstanding airmanship for landing on an isolated stretch of beach.
