Prophets and Prophesying
There are more than 20 apostles listed in the New Testament. The word "apostle" in the Greek is "apostolos", which means "one who is sent; an ambassador or delegate". The greatest apostle mentioned is the Lord Jesus. ".. the apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus" (Hebrews 3:1) He's in a class by Himself. Then there's the twelve, with Matthias replacing Judas Iscariot. Then there's the Apostle Paul, who was specifically called by God as an apostle to the Gentiles and an author of a good chunk of the New Testament. Then we have Jesus' brother James referred to as an apostle in Galatians 1:19. James, Paul and the twelve were foundational in their roles. Then there's Barnabas in Acts 14:14, possibly Apollos in I Corinthians 4:6-9, possibly Timothy and Silvanus in I Thessalonians 1:1 and 2:6, Epaphroditus in Philippians 2:25, two unnamed apostles in II Corinthians 8:23, and possibly Andronicus and Junia in Romans 16:7. That makes a total of 19-24 apostles in the NT, or 5-10 besides Jesus, the twelve, and Paul. That means that no, there aren't just 12. There were only 12 apostles of the Lamb, but there were other apostles given to the church along with evangelists, pastors, teachers, and prophets in Ephesians 4:11. Since we still have evangelists, pastors, and teachers, and since there were more than 12 apostles listed in the NT, and since the Bible doesn't say that there was a one century expiration date on the gift of apostles, it would appear that we still have apostles today. They won't fulfill the role of the original 12 of course, but they will still do the work of an apostle in establishing a new work in a place where they were sent.

Cessationist - One who believes that the miraculous gifts of the Spirit ceased operation at the end of the apostolic age.
Continuationist - One who believes that the miraculous gifts of the Spirit continued operation after the apostolic age.
