When Thomas Massie insisted on an in-person vote for the $2 trillion CARES Act in March 2020, Donald Trump unleashed his fury, calling Massie a “third-rate grandstander” and threatening to take him down in a primary. Massie, facing an election where Trump had a 95% approval rating among GOP voters, stood his ground—arguing that if essential workers had to show up, so should Congress. He ended up winning that primary with 81% of the vote. Now, history may be repeating itself as Trump once again threatens to primary Massie.
