Author Nora Eisenberg, Katie Halper’s brilliant mother, joins the show to discuss her expertise surrounding various aspects of the Gulf War. In this segment, Nora discusses Gulf War Illness, formerly known as Gulf War Syndrome. She describes in detail the manner in which veterans who exhibit symptoms of the illness acquired it: anticholinergic agents via insecticides, experimental anti–nerve gas pharmaceuticals, and sarin that was released into the air when the U.S. bombed a location holding a large amount of the chemical weapon.
This type of science is only newly accepted. What soldiers returning from the Gulf War were experiencing was long thought of as psychological, psychosomatic, imagined, or mysterious.
There are also extreme examples of the consequences for people in the U.S. of knowingly allowing seriously mentally ill returning soldiers to re-enter society without any medical assistance from the government, and Nora mentions some of the most well-known cases.
