Organizer Carrie Gleason talks about how asylum seekers and their neighbors forced Mayor Eric Adams to shut down a dangerous shelter in order to protest immigrants from Trump's looming attacks.
Floyd Bennett Shelter, a massive shelter on the edge of Queens, NY that houses 2,000+ asylum seekers, is set to shut down on January 15 following pressure from residents and families in the area who have been calling on NYC Mayor Eric Adams to shut down the shelter for months.
Floyd Bennett, a set of tents in the path of floods and storms, was already unsafe and unfit to house the thousands of migrants inside. But a new set of threats arose after Trump was elected. The shelter sits on federal land, which makes it particularly susceptible to the admin's threat of deportations and raids - ICE could send armed guards into the shelter without a warrant or turn it into a detention center.
Residents and advocates cheered when, just a week ago, the Adams admin said they'd be shutting the shelter down. But now residents are facing chaos as the Adams admin has moved to expedite the shuttering of the shelter. Residents are being kicked out quickly, with little notice and, sometimes, with workers at the shelter trashing their things, including passports.
Carrie Gleason is a longtime organizer and parent living in Flatbush whose child attends school with several children from the migrant families at Floyd Bennett. She and a group of volunteers have been working for months to support the families and to move them to a safer home.
