Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on the Eastern Front of World War II starts out with the prelude episode #10. Previously we discussed the the beginning of the second world war, as Germany invaded Poland, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark and Norway in a quick succession (), while this episode will focus on the Soviet strategic situation before Operation Barbarossa. After the Red Army’s bitter experience in the Winter War with Finland, Stalin initiated a sweeping reorganization of Soviet military forces. This episode dives into the state of the Red Army on the eve of Operation Barbarossa, examining leadership changes, the strategic deployment of armies across five military fronts, and the creation of two echelons of defense. Despite plans for massive counterattacks and the formation of mechanized corps, Soviet units were severely understrength, undertrained, and poorly equippedespecially in tanks and aircraft. A key theme emergesthe Soviet Union had ample warning of Germany’s invasion in 1941, but Stalin’s refusal to authorize full mobilization left his armies vulnerable. We also explore how the Red Air Force was restructured after lessons from Spain and Finland, yet left exposed and scattered. With outdated tanks, missing ammunition, and underprepared officers, the Red Army would face disaster not from surprise, but from systemic delays and political misjudgment.
