Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on the Eastern Front of World War II starts out with the prelude episode #12. Previously we discussed the German strategic situation before the war (), while this episode will talk about the concept of Blitzkrieg, debunking the biggest lie of WWII. The word Blitzkrieg conjures images of lightningfast German offensivesPanzers racing across Europe, Stukas screaming overhead, and Allied armies crumbling in days. But how much of this reflects reality, and how much is postwar mythmaking? In this episode, we begin with the myth of Blitzkrieg, tracing how the concept was shaped by German generals after the war to rewrite their legacy. We explore what Blitzkrieg was (and wasn’t)not a formal doctrine, but a loosely understood term applied after the fact. The legendary 1940 campaign in France is dissected to reveal a story of luck, misjudged Allied responses, and operational improvisation rather than strategic genius. We then turn to interwar doctrine and combined arms theory, showing how all major powers were grappling with similar ideas about modern warfare. Through German panzer operations and realworld constraints, we uncover the logistical and industrial limits that undercut the image of an unstoppable war machine. Finally, we examine the legacy and propaganda of Blitzkrieg, revealing how the myth took holdboth in Nazi Germany and in postwar Western narratives.
