The Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on the ancient civilizations and nomadic cultures continues with a video on the Tengriism - the shared religion of the Turks and Mongols. Under the endless blue sky of the Eurasian steppe, the ancient Turks and Mongols worshipped Tengri – the Eternal Blue Sky – long before Islam, Christianity, or Buddhism reshaped Inner Asia. This video explores the original religion of the steppe nomads: Tengrism. We follow its elusive origins, from the Orkhon inscriptions and the Gokturk Khaganate, through rich Turko-Mongolic mythology with sky gods, wolf ancestors, and powerful spirits tied to horses, fire, and the natural world. We then track how Chinggis (Genghis) Khan and his successors used Tengri to legitimize the Mongol Empire and build an imperial ideology that could coexist with Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity. Finally, we examine how Tengrism declined, survived on the fringes of Siberia, and is now being rediscovered as part of Turkic and Mongolic cultural identity in the modern era.
