Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on the history of North America, Colonialism and the First Nation/Native American resistance continues with a video on the Pontiac's War. In 1763, the British Empire appeared triumphant in North America. France had been defeated, its forts occupied, and its western claims transferred to the Crown. But the Indigenous nations of the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley had never surrendered. Led by the Odawa chief Pontiac, a broad alliance rose against British rule. Warriors besieged Detroit, overwhelmed isolated outposts, and captured Fort Michilimackinac through a lacrosse ruse. Within weeks, British authority west of the Appalachians was close to collapse. This video follows Pontiac’s War, also called Pontiac’s Rebellion, from the policies that ignited it to the sieges of Detroit and Fort Pitt, the Battle of Bushy Run, and the violence that consumed the frontier. It also examines one of the conflict’s darkest episodes: the documented British attempt to spread smallpox using items taken from Fort Pitt’s hospital. Although Pontiac’s alliance could not expel Britain, its resistance forced the empire to change course. Gift-giving resumed, western settlement was restricted, and the Royal Proclamation of 1763 reserved vast lands for Indigenous peoples. That compromise enraged many American colonists and helped deepen the tensions that eventually produced the American Revolution. This was the Native uprising that shook Britain’s new empire and changed America’s future.
