Kings and Generals' historical animated documentary series covering the Pacific War continues with a video on Australia's New Guinea Campaign. In March 1943, the momentum in the Pacific had shifted, but Japan still held a powerful defensive network across New Guinea. This full-length documentary follows the Allied campaign from the destruction of a Japanese reinforcement convoy in the Battle of the Bismarck Sea to the capture of Finschhafen and the desperate counterattack at Scarlet Beach. After the air battles of Operation I-Go, Australian and American forces began grinding toward Salamaua through some of the harshest terrain of the war. The fighting at Bobdubi Ridge, Mubo, Mount Tambu and Roosevelt Ridge became part of a larger deception, drawing Japanese reinforcements away from Lae. That set the stage for Operation Postern, a coordinated amphibious landing east of Lae and an airborne assault at Nadzab. The video then follows the fall of Salamaua and Lae, the battle at Kaiapit, the advance through the Markham and Ramu valleys, and the landing at Scarlet Beach. With Finschhafen captured, the Japanese 20th Division launched a major counteroffensive to throw the Australians back into the sea. This is the complete story of the 1943 New Guinea Campaign, the offensive that secured the Huon Peninsula approach, weakened Japan’s outer perimeter and pushed MacArthur ever closer to the Philippines.
