Ashley shot Doug while the two were in the middle of a contentious custody battle. Since Doug’s death, Ashley claimed she shot her husband in self-defense after months of abuse. The ballerina faces up to 30 years in prison. She was taken into custody right after the verdict was read.

In September 2020, Ashley Benefield ran to a neighbor's house in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, and stated she had just shot her husband. Douglas Benefield had several gunshot wounds to his leg, arm, and chest area. Ashley Benefield claims she shot him in self-defense after months of alleged abuse. She was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Ashley Benefield made bail and has been living with family and her daughter since the crime.
