10:03Now PlayingSocial media misinformation has fuelled riots in Southport following the killing of three girls. But misinformation thrives in a vacuum - so how much of this can be attributed to the anonymity afforded to the suspect?
As he is under 18, his name cannot legally be reported by news organisations. This has opened the door was illegitimate organisations and actors to spread a fake name to seemingly advance their political aims.
But the law that enforces this is nearly 100 years old, and was last updated in the 1980s. Legal expert Joshua Rozenberg (03:14) explains to Nick Ferrari why the law is as it is, and what effect it has had on the Southport case. Sociologist Dr Aaron Winter (06:33), who specialises on the far-right, also gives his view.
It comes as the mother of the seven-year-old girl who was killed in a stabbing spree in Southport has called for an end to the violence after yesterday's riot.
Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, Bebe King, six, and Alice Aguiar, nine, were killed in the attacks on Monday.
Their deaths sparked riots on the streets of Southport last night but Elsie's mum, Jenni, has called for an end to the violence.
"'This is the only thing that I will write, but please stop the violence in Southport tonight," she said.
"The police have been nothing but heroic these last 24 hours and they and we don't need this."
