The world begins to fight back against Trump's tariffs | LBC

Global stock markets have suffered a second consecutive day of losses following China’s announcement of a 34% retaliatory tariff on US imports.

The decision has reignited fears of a global recession and intensified scrutiny of Donald Trump’s new economic policy.

Speaking to LBC, Ambassador Carla Sands —a former member of Donald Trump’s economic advisory council and ex-US Ambassador to Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands—defended the President’s approach, insisting the trade war was both necessary and effective.

“This is something he started in his first administration, and it was wildly successful,” Sands told LBC’s Tom Swarbrick. “He added 500,000 new manufacturing jobs not long after imposing tariffs, and by the time the pandemic hit, that number had risen to 750,000.”

Sands argued that America’s failure to produce enough goods domestically threatens its global status, adding: “You have to make things and be a manufacturing power to be a great power in the world.”

“Our dependence on China for rare earth minerals, pharmaceutical precursors, and materials like steel and aluminium puts us at risk,” Sands warned. “President Trump is thinking about the American people and our security. You cannot be a service economy and a great military power.”
