Gaza analyst reacts to hostage-prisoner list exchange | LBC

Shelagh Fogarty is joined by Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib, a Gaza analyst and senior fellow at the Atlantic Council. The pair discuss the proposed Gaza peace deal after Hamas claimed negotiators have exchanged lists of prisoners and hostages who would be released if a ceasefire is agreed.

Mr Alkhatib expresses cautious optimism, describing the deal as a potential way to 'end the bloodshed' and 'suffering'. However, he highlights significant concerns, include the immediate ceasefire and exchange, and the broader question of Gaza’s future post-Hamas.

Mr Alkhatib believes the second component is more contentious, as Hamas resists giving up full control while refusing international stabilisation forces. He adds that this deters foreign investment in Gaza’s reconstruction.

The guest notes that regional powers like Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey are pressuring Hamas to accept the deal, driven by their own political and economic interests. He stresses this may be a final opportunity for a resolution, with little chance of renegotiation if talks collapse.

The conversation shifts to the broader issue of Palestinian leadership. Mr Alkhatib criticises the Palestinian Authority for perpetuating unhelpful narratives and failing to tell the truth to their people about internal engagement with Israel.

He calls for new, younger Palestinian leaders who can steer away from a resistance-based identity and towards coexistence, pragmatism, and prosperity.
