11:54Now PlayingAttorneys Brian Kabateck and Shant Karnikian dig into the House Ethics Committee's bombshell report on North Carolina Congressman Chuck Edwards, censured for what a bipartisan panel called "persistent unprofessional and inappropriate conduct" toward two young female staffers. The committee found "substantial reason to believe" Edwards violated House rules on sexual harassment and hostile workplaces after showering the staffers, both in their early 20s, with gifts including jewelry worth over $1,000, designer purses, guns, shoes, a KitchenAid mixer, a robotic vacuum, and a hired singer performing an Ed Sheeran cover at a birthday party. The 25-page report also details one-on-one dinners, canceled votes to spend time with the staffers, comments on their weight and appearance, late-night personal texts, notes about his "effusive affection," and private trips to New York and Las Vegas. Brian and Shant trace the pattern back to Edwards' time as a North Carolina state senator, where at least one of the staffers began working for him at 19. Hours after the report dropped, Edwards announced he's ending his reelection campaign, citing "much prayer and reflection," though he'll serve out the rest of his term. Brian's bottom line: Republicans loudly condemn Democratic scandals while quietly circling the wagons around their own, and a formal censure is a slap on the wrist for congressional misconduct this serious.
