A bunch of lefty western anti-Israel activists tried to march through Egypt to Rafah, the border crossing to Gaza, to film themselves waving watermelon flags and crying on the shoulders of some Gazans - honestly, haven’t those people suffered enough?

Lulled into a false sense of security by the soft-touch they get from the cops in the West, they berated Egyptian men and security services. One of them cried and invoked Islam via an interpreter. Even for activists, the level of arrogance was off the charts.

There were some other revealing moments - a woman talking about her “comrades” while wearing $4,500 earrings; a second-generation French Muslim who clearly identifies much more with Islam than with France; a leftist revealing his Disneyfied “these people good, those people bad” worldview.

It could have gone much worse for them - the Egyptians could have actually let them into Gaza. The Italian activist Vittorio Arrigoni went to Gaza to support the intifada.

The very extremists he insisted on calling “resistance fighters” turned on him - they kidnapped him, paraded him on video - blindfolded, bruised, and accused of “spreading corruption” - and then killed him.

His murder is a grim reminder that Gaza is fractured by rival Islamist factions who despise Westerners as infidels and have no qualms about killing.

Romanticizing radical movements may score retweets in fashionable circles, but on the ground it can get you killed.

And Egypt has good reasons for not wanting Gazan refugees. When Jordan accepted hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees, they nearly destroyed the country. When Lebanon accepted them, they did destroy the country.
