An Ethiopian man, Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, arrived in Britain on a small boat last week. He's already been accused of a raft of sex offences, some against children. This sparked a demonstration against the hotel in the leafy borough of Epping where the Home Office, in their infinite wisdom, had placed him.
What was notable was the change in the response. Last year, in the aftermath of the Southport attacks, police battered and arrested protesters, politicians condemned "racist far right thuggery" and counter protesters took to the streets.
This time there was a counter protest by Stand Up To Racism (given they were siding with the sex attack suspect, maybe we should rebrand them Stand Up For Noncism) but it was poorly attended and moved on by police. Media tried their usual "Epping man" nonsense, but fooled nobody. Politicians said the hotel should be closed. No arrests have been made.
And across the water in Ireland, effigies of boat migrants were burned on Eleventh Night bonfires. The media bleated "racism", but nobody cared, least of all the many legal migrants who agree with the bonfire's sentiment. It follows fairly brutal protests in Ballymena that showed Britain that direct action could work where engaging with authorities doesn't.
Now they're staring down the barrel of escalating protests, will our leaders finally put their insane open-borders blank-slatism diversity-strength ideologies to one side and do what people want? I doubt it. Things are going to get worse before they get better.
