8:51Now PlayingUnder the harsh reign of the Taliban, the vibrant melody of Afghan culture has been muffled. After seizing power in August 2021, the Taliban imposed draconian restrictions on women, diminishing their role in society, and it wasn't just women who bore the brunt of their tyranny. The country's musicians also fell victim to a concerted campaign to eliminate anything deemed unIslamic, culminating in regular attacks and a ban on music. For many like Jawid Shawqi, once a cherished musician, life was abruptly transformed into a bleak reality as he was forced to become a roadside shoe polisher. "The Taliban are enemies of happiness and music, and life has become hell for the people," he poignantly expressed. From lively concerts and weddings to a silence that echoes with despair, these musicians, forbidden to pursue their passion, have seen their lives take a tragic detour. In the face of this persecution, many musicians have been compelled to flee or comply, while the Taliban ironically produce their music, underscoring their obliviousness to the healing potential of music in a war-torn country. As the International Music Council expressed, the Taliban have turned Afghanistan into a "silent nation," where the right to enjoy, create, and express oneself through music has been grievously stifled.
