This devastating situation coincides with a scorching heatwave affecting the northern hemisphere across four continents. The crisis has particularly impacted Egyptian pilgrims, with reports indicating that more than 90% of the 658 Egyptian deaths were unregistered participants. Other countries, including Jordan, Malaysia, and Pakistan, have also reported significant losses. The severity of the situation is underscored by Saudi authorities' report of "more than 2,700 cases of 'heat exhaustion' on June 16th alone." Climate experts warn that this may become a recurring issue, with a Saudi study noting that temperatures in pilgrimage areas are rising by 0.4 degrees Celsius per decade. As one Arab diplomat starkly observed, "The new death figures included 58 Egyptians... around 630 (or more than 90% of the reported deaths from this country) were not registered with the Saudi government," highlighting the scale of the tragedy and the challenges faced by both official and unofficial pilgrims.
