18:38Now PlayingIn a shocking series of coordinated attacks on June 24, Islamic militants targeted Orthodox Christian churches, a synagogue, and a traffic police post in Dagestan, a predominantly Muslim republic in southern Russia. The assaults, which occurred in the cities of Derbent and Makhachkala, resulted in 20 deaths, including 15 police officers, and left 46 people injured. The attackers used firearms and Molotov cocktails, setting fire to religious buildings and vehicles. In one particularly brutal incident, Rev. Nikolai Kotelnikov, a 66-year-old Orthodox priest, had his throat slit before his church was set ablaze. The attacks coincided with the Orthodox celebration of Pentecost, adding to their emotional impact. Dagestan's governor, Sergei Melikov, attributed the violence to foreign-directed "sleeper cells," stating that the assailants aimed at "sowing panic and fear." Russian authorities reported killing at least five gunmen in response, with some reports suggesting the attackers included family members of a local pro-Kremlin party official. This violent outbreak, the deadliest in Russia since the Crocus City Hall attack in March that killed 145 people, has reignited concerns about religious extremism in the region. The incident has prompted a three-day mourning period and highlighted the ongoing challenges of maintaining ethnic and religious harmony in Russia's diverse and volatile North Caucasus region, especially in light of previous incidents such as the antisemitic airport rampage in Makhachkala in October 2023.
