Citing “Islamophobia Awareness Month” and a UN resolution condemning such acts, Ali argued that desecration “fuels division and hatred within our society.” While Starmer condemned desecration as “awful,” his refusal to categorically dismiss the idea has raised concerns among critics, including the National Secular Society, which warned, “Calls for the legal protection of religious texts and figures should be seen for what they are – a demand for the reintroduction of blasphemy laws.” Advocates for free speech emphasized that such laws threaten democratic freedoms and urged the government to ensure tackling hatred does not infringe on the right to free expression.
