It’s this week’s edition of the Strategy Session, the series that takes you behind the strategic curtain with Rick Wilson, Joe Trippi, and Stuart Stevens. This is your chance to listen in on the calls these guys have every day as they envision a world without MAGA, and put the plans in place to make that happen.
Earlier today, the Senate passed the disastrous budget that’s been populating every political podcast and news feed since it was built and passed in the House. You already know about it, especially if you’re a regular at Lincoln Square. But just to give you a taste, by some estimates, it will leave nearly 12 million Americans completely uninsured. It will gut Medicare and Medicaid (that is not an overstatement. It cuts over a trillion from Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP.)
But not only does it cut funding to programs like Medicaid, it makes it bureaucratically more difficult to take advantage of it.
It also funds immigration and border enforcement to the tune of some $175 billion. ICE alone gets over $100 billion. Make no mistake, this is the American Gestapo.
So we know all of this is happening. But Rick, Stuart, and Joe spend their time communicating and strategizing. In other words, while they are deeply concerned about the effects of this bill on everyday Americans, their careers were built on fighting measures like these politically. Political solutions are running thin, but we haven’t exhausted all of them yet.
And, of course, some solutions are secondarily political. There doesn’t have to be an election, in other words, for millions upon millions of us to hit the streets. Protest is a political act, and we need to exercise it like our lives depend on it.
Because they do.
As a side dish to the main course in this episode, the guys also discussed the optics and absurdity of the so-called Alligator Alcatraz in the Everglades.
What’s the through-line between a prison in the swamps and this catastrophic budget bill?
They are both signposts on our fast track into fascism. Watch this week’s episode and let us know what you think. We’re especially curious to know what you think is the worst part of this bill. The Gestapo? The Medicaid cuts? So many bad things to choose from.
We’ll be back at the same time next week: Tuesday at 5 p.m. ET.
