Ashleigh Merchant Buried Fani Willis and Nathan Wade in Today's Georgia Senate Committee Hearing

A Georgia state Senate committee investigated Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and heard testimony from defense attorney Ashleigh Merchant, who had initially raised allegations regarding the DA's allegedly improper relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade. Merchant, representing former Trump campaign official Mike Roman in the election subversion case, was the inaugural witness before the panel.

The committee, composed of six Republicans and three Democrats, was established to assess whether Willis exhibited a potential conflict of interest or misappropriated public funds in connection with her hiring of Wade in 2021, prior to the purported start of their romantic relationship.

During the process, the committee requested and reviewed key documents Merchant utilized in her attempts to disqualify Willis from leading the comprehensive 2020 Georgia election interference racketeering case against former President Donald Trump and 14 of his co-defendants.

Although the panel has the authority to propose amendments to Georgia law or craft new legislation, it does not possess the power to directly penalize Willis.

In the first committee hearing to probe into Willis's actions, Republican Committee Chairman Sen. Bill Cowsert revealed that they had received testimonies from “whistleblowers” within the Fulton County District Attorney’s office. However, specific details from these testimonies were not disclosed. Cowsert stated that the committee was committed to thoroughly investigating any credible allegations, regardless of the length of the investigation, and indicated plans to subpoena additional witnesses for further testimony.
